The Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) recently hosted a CIC Fellows Sharing Session at the Kowloon Bay campus, inviting Mr. YU Kam-hung, the former president of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, to speak on "Real Estate Development and the Role of Surveyors". The event drew a significant audience of staff and students. In his presentation, Mr. YU leveraged his extensive industry experience to provide a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the entire real estate development cycle , emphasising the crucial role surveyors play throughout the process.

Mr. YU began by highlighting funding as the foundational element of real estate development, systematically guiding the audience through each stage: land acquisition, planning and design, construction, and ultimately, property handover. He underscored the consistent importance of surveyors' professional knowledge and skills in ensuring legal and regulatory compliance at every stage, thereby establishing a solid foundation for project success.

Furthermore, Mr. YU introduced the diverse specialisations within the surveying profession and discussed current trends in professional development. The Q&A session provided an opportunity for an in-depth discussion of cyclical market fluctuations and the impact of macroeconomic conditions on the industry. He conveyed optimism about the prospects of Hong Kong, encouraging students to adopt a global perspective, integrate their expertise, and proactively adapt to market opportunities and challenges. This sharing session not only enhanced students' understanding of the surveying profession, but also provided valuable guidance and inspiration for their career planning.
